On Oct. 1, Boingo launched an initiatives for the Make-A-Wish “Miles of Smiles” campaign and managed to reach the million-mile goal within just six weeks. Many of Boingo customers, employees, family members and friends donated individual airline frequent flier miles, which Boingo matched mile-for-mile. Boingo also contributed Delta SkyMiles for every new Boingo Unlimited subscription purchased before Nov. 15.

In a press release, Dave Hagan, president and CEO for Boingo Wireless (News - Alert), said, “It’s uplifting to see how the Boingo community has rallied around the ‘Miles of Smiles’ cause to help us reach the one million-mile target. Our heartfelt thanks to the generous donors and the Make-A-Wish Foundation whose efforts enrich the lives of thousands of children with life-threatening medical conditions.”

Due to the miles raised through the “Miles of Smiles” campaign, the Make-A-Wish Foundation will now be in a position to fulfill the wishes of even more children with life-threatening medical conditions. The Foundation granted a record 13,582 wishes last year. Close to 70 percent of the wishes granted each year involve air travel, which is equivalent to 2.5 billion airline miles.

David Williams, Make-A-Wish Foundation of America president and chief executive officer, said, “Boingo and its community have shown incredible generosity toward our wish kids. The Boingo team’s million-mile donation helps us transport wish kids to the destinations of their dreams. Each wish is a life-changing experience that provides these courageous children with much-needed hope, strength and joy.”

The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. The foundation started in 1980 when a group of caring volunteers helped a young boy fulfill his dream of becoming a police officer, the Foundation is one of the world’s leading children’s charities, with 64 chapters in the United States and its territories. Now thanks to the help of generous donors and nearly 25,000 volunteers, the Make-A-Wish Foundation grants a wish every 40 minutes and has granted more than 200,000 wishes in the United States since its inception.
