SwiftBroadband satellite communications is available to subscribers of UVdatalink, Universal's aircraft data link communications service. It also has the capability of expanding UVdatalink's Inmarsat service offering which already includes Swift (News - Alert) 64 and Classic Aero. The new in-flight connectivity service has been made possible because of the setting up of a new relationship between Vizada and Universal Weather and Aviation, Inc. Vizada (News - Alert) is the largest independent provider of mobile satellite services.

In a release, Randy Stephens, Divisional Vice President, Product Management and Specialty Services, Universal said that "With SwiftBroadband, we can now greatly increase the speed of in-flight connectivity for our UVdatalink subscribers who are SwiftBroadband compatible. Our clients and their passengers will now have access to faster and uninterrupted connectivity for their voice, SMS, e-mail, broadband internet, VPN and video conferencing needs."

In addition to SwiftBroadband, UVdatalink will also be able to provide support for direct dialing to the aircraft, which has been made available for both Inmarsat and Iridium (News - Alert) connections. Using this service, people on the ground will be able to reach and connect with any handset onboard an aircraft in flight. Calls from the ground can be made by using a 10-digit phone number.
