Brazilian DSNG Operator Casablanca Online Purchases Newtec Broadcast Modulators to Cover Next Summer's World Cup

By Marisa Torrieri, TMCnet Editor

Just in time for next summer’s World Cup soccer tournaments, Casablanca Online, a Brazilian DSNG operator, has announced it will use Newtec’s (News - Alert) broadcast modulators to cover the games in South Africa.

Under terms of the agreement, Newtec has supplied Casablanca Online with DVB-S2 Broadcast modulators with BISS scrambling capabilities. The reliability of Newtec’s equipment for live transmissions from South Africa back to Brazil was the essential requirement for the project’s success, according to Casablanca.

Broadcast networks and their affiliates -- plus independent DSNG operators -- have been using Newtec’s Broadcast modulators for many years, a spokeswoman for the company, which is headquarters in Belgium, tells TMCnet.

“In the telco world, Newtec is mainly active in the medium- and high-rate IP backhaul solutions,” said Bernard Paquet, Newtec’s product marketing director. “Newtec delivers a number of key benefits to these customers which have allowed us to become market leaders in this region. In the broadcast market, we offer some very innovative solutions that also deliver reliability and significant cost savings.”

According to Newtec, reliability is the main feature that differentiates its broadcast modulators in the broadcast market.

“The fast adoption of DVB-S2 by Newtec and its leading role in the technology has been a key business enabler in these markets,” said a company spokeswoman. “Demand for bandwidth is on the rise and satellite users are looking to reduce their operational costs. DVB-S2 offers this OPEX (News - Alert) reduction.”

Additionally, the acceptance of DVB-S2 as efficient transmission standard extends beyond the broadcast space; telecommunications companies have also accepted DVB-S2 as a means of leveraging greater bandwidth efficiency.

In the Latin American market, Newtec said it is delivering solutions that address the key issues impacting broadcasters and satellite service providers such as interference and extreme weather conditions.

The only challenge is that as the demands for capacity in Latin America increase, there will be an increasing demand for transmitting Mbit/s over satellite – which is currently exceeded by the available capacity in MHz. In the telco space, as operators plan to bring data/internet services to rural areas means manufacturers will have to come up with bandwidth efficient solutions.

“So far the impact of the current economic climate on the Latin American markets has been minimal,” said Paquet. “Newtec’s business in these regions has not seen any negative effects; quite the opposite. The only factors that are slowing growth in the telco and satellite sectors is a lack of bandwidth, so Newtec is well placed to address this with our FlexACM technology.”

Innovative Features Mean Major Savings for Cellular Operators Using Satellite Backhaul
With the rising cost of satellite bandwidth and the need for more of it to support an ever increasing number of voice, data and now video services, operators must seek ways to reduce both their hardware investment costs and operating expenses, especially when fierce competition forces them to provide these new services without raising their rates.
