Broadcast Modulator Market Sees Growing Interest by Satellite Service Providers

By Marisa Torrieri, TMCnet Editor

For a lot of industries, a sour economy was the major determinant for investing in any new technology. For this reason, Newtec (News - Alert), a Belgium-based provider of broadcast modulators, said it is seeing an increase in the number of satellite service providers, satellite operators and integrators who want to use its technology.

As satellite providers move deeper into the realm of IP communications, preserving the bottom line becomes more crucial. Because Newtec’s broadcast modulator technology is cost-effective -- allowing broadcasters to respond to new market requirements and reduce their operating costs -- it is a logical choice, according to company representatives.

“Some years ago, consumers watched TV under broadcaster control,” said Bernard Paquet, Newtec’s product marketing director. “Today, it is the consumer who chooses when and how he will consume content.”

Ultimately, using modulators designed for broadcast contribution, DSNG and distribution applications over satellite translates to lower operating costs (thanks to high-bandwidth efficiency), high versatility and flexibility.

“The Newtec Broadcast modulator is highly reliable because of its hardware design and the fact that it is fully or 100 percent compliant with the DVB-S2 standard resulting in a guaranteed interoperability with DVB receivers,” Paquet recently told TMCnet.

The latest modulators optimize the use of the available satellite capacity by supporting multistream, VCM, ACM and tools to counter linear and non-linear distortion, according to Newtec.

Additionally, they support simultaneously the most common ASI + IP interfaces.

Newtec manages the complete production process, from the first design proposal to the complete manufacturing of the product. Because of this, equipment is much more reliable than in the past, the company said.

Innovative Features Mean Major Savings for Cellular Operators Using Satellite Backhaul
With the rising cost of satellite bandwidth and the need for more of it to support an ever increasing number of voice, data and now video services, operators must seek ways to reduce both their hardware investment costs and operating expenses, especially when fierce competition forces them to provide these new services without raising their rates.
