DSNG and Other Markets Embrace Broadcast Modulator Technology
By Marisa Torrieri, TMCnet Editor
Across the world, service providers are investing in telecom equipment that helps reduce operating and capital expenditures.
And when it comes to state-of-the-art satellite technology for the next generation of high-bandwidth applications, certain vertical markets have a particularly high interest, said Bernard Paquet, the product marketing director for Newtec (News - Alert), a Belgium-based provider of satellite-based equipment and technology.

According to Paquet, the first of these is the DSNG market.
“When equipped with a Newtec modulator, a DSNG van becomes a virtual remote office, fully integrated in the overall IT and collaborative news production infrastructure of the broadcaster,” Paquet said. “Newtec broadcast equipment allow real two-way connectivity between the DSNG and the studio.”
Armed with this technology, “the remote journalist can now perform nonlinear editing on the road and download the finished material to the studio,” Paquet said.
In parallel with the video content transmission, the crew has access to the Internet, e-mail and VoIP coordination channel over satellite, he added.
Another burgeoning market for broadcast modulator technology is those who are interested in contribution services between studios. With Newtec equipment, it is possible to organize video exchange as file transfer in a flexible manner leading to significant cost savings, Paquet said.
A third application that is gaining traction is the distribution of programs to head-end infrastructure. Paquet said Newtec equipment is designed to interface with new IP infrastructure that lowers implementation costs. When activated, DualFlow technology allows for the implementation of filtering and routing functionalities.
Based on IP filtering, it is possible to extract one transport stream and to transmit it via satellite to local terrestrial transmitters, cable head-ends or telco head-ends. For direct-to-home applications, DualFlow allows direct IP interfacing between the modulator and the statistical multiplexers. Before transmission, the IP layer is removed to only transmit the digital transport stream signal over satellite.
“The main concern raised by some customers is the upfront cost associated to the upgrade,” Paquet recently told TMCnet.
To address these concerns, Paquet said Newtec has a plan in place to order to support the migration upgrade. First, Newtec gives a large number of trainings on new satellite transmission technologies and its products to new users. Second, “the Newtec technical assistance center is organized to provide demanding customers one of the highest service levels on the market.”
