Newtec: DSNG Market Evolves with Demand for HD Video Services

By Marisa Torrieri, TMCnet Editor

Now that the demand for HD video services has hit a new high, so has the demand for products that can accommodate high-bandwidth applications.

In the digital satellite news gathering market, which relies on broadcast modulators, antennas and other equipment to be compatible with the newer DVB-S2 modulation standard for HD, this is especially true. Service providers are concerned with having the picture and signal quality they need in a timely fashion. And they’re especially concerned that equipment is reliable.

Newtec offers a line of broadcast modulators with optional RF upconverter and BISS scrambler, as well as broadcast modulators, modems and demodulators that offer MPEG and IP capabilities. Other DSNG offerings include software (for reliable content deliver) and MENOS DSNG terminals.

“It’s always been competitive market,” Slava Frayter, vice president, Americas, for Belgium-based satellite technology provider Newtec (News - Alert), told TMCnet. “But with the introduction of HD and DVB-S2, the market has evolved, creating strong demand for flexible and reliable products that Newtec provides.”

Newtec’s broadcast modulation products are based on the DVB-DSNG standard (which uses a modulation technology Newtec said it invented) and the newer DVB-S2 standard, which started gaining traction in 2005.

“DVB-S2 allows content to be distributed more efficiently and became an HD enabler,” Frayer told TMCnet, referring to the company’s flagship product in the market: the AZ110 broadcast modulator.

The result, said Frayter, is that Netwtec equipment is used by all major networks in the fixed environment as well as with DSNGs. Additionally, a growing number of independent DSNG companies are choosing Newtec’s equipment, to do HD transmissions.

More and more, service providers are investing in broadcast equipment that helps reduce operating and capital expenditures.

Bernard Paquet, the product marketing director for Newtec, recently told TMCnet that the DSNG market is one hottest communications markets that will continue to grow in 2010.

“When equipped with a Newtec modulator, a DSNG van becomes a virtual remote office, fully integrated in the overall IT and collaborative news production infrastructure of the broadcaster,” Paquet said. “Newtec broadcast equipment allow real two-way connectivity between the DSNG and the studio.”

Armed with this technology, “the remote journalist can now perform nonlinear editing on the road and download the finished material to the studio,” Paquet said.

Innovative Features Mean Major Savings for Cellular Operators Using Satellite Backhaul
With the rising cost of satellite bandwidth and the need for more of it to support an ever increasing number of voice, data and now video services, operators must seek ways to reduce both their hardware investment costs and operating expenses, especially when fierce competition forces them to provide these new services without raising their rates.
