SPACE ANNOUNCES CRITICAL FUNDING NOW AVAILABLE FOR RURAL FIRE DEPARTMENTS IN OHIO'S 18TH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRIC

Nov 20, 2009 (Congressional Documents and Publications/ContentWorks via COMTEX) -- WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Furthering his efforts to keep communities safe and bring important resources to rural Ohio, U.S. Rep. Zack Space (OH-18) today announced that grant funding is now available for fire departments in Ohio's 18th Congressional District. The grant programs providing this funding were reauthorized through 2014 by the House of Representatives on Wednesday.

"These grants will provide the funding and resources necessary to keep our small towns safe," Space said. "When a fire breaks out in one of our rural communities, we face unique challenges and our fire departments must be prepared to deal with them. Our fire departments should never have to choose between trained personnel and having safe, functioning equipment, and this bill protects against having to make that choice." By a bipartisan vote of 395-31, the House of Representatives approved the Fire Grants Reauthorization Act of 2009, a bill that reauthorizes funding for the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program and the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant Program.

The bipartisan legislation authorizes a total of $2.2 billion a year in grants for local municipalities to hire personnel, upgrade facilities, train staff, and purchase safety equipment and emergency vehicles. It also lessens the burden for local fire departments looking to access these critical funds by lowering matching requirements and modifying time commitments.

The application period for the FY 2009 SAFER Grant Program opened Monday, November 16, 2009 and will close on Friday, December 18, 2009 at 5:00 p.m. EST. For more information about the SAFER Grant Program, including how to apply for these funds, visit http://www.firegrantsupport.com/.

Earlier this week, Congressman Space filmed a video discussing the legislation and its impact on rural Ohio. The video is available by clicking here or by visiting his YouTube channel.
