BRIEF: ViaSat earnings fall

CARLSBAD, Feb 09, 2010 (North County Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- ViaSat Inc. earned $3.2 million, or 9 cents per share, in the quarter ended Jan. 1. For the same quarter a year ago, the satellite communications company reported earning $10.7 million, or 34 cents per share.

ViaSat's expenses during the quarter included completing its purchase of satellite Internet service provider WildBlue Communications Inc., announced last year for $568 million in cash and stock. WildBlue's service will be expanded in early 2011 when a ViaSat satellite is scheduled to be launched.

Shares of ViaSat closed before the announcement at $26.24 each, down 18 cents for the day.
