CEA Hails AutoHop as a Pro-Consumer Innovation
ARLINGTON, Va. --(Business Wire)--
The following statement can be attributed to Michael Petricone, senior
vice president, government affairs, Consumer Electronics Association (News - Alert)
(CEA) ®, regarding the discussion of DISH Network's AutoHop
at the House Subcommittee on Communications and Technology hearing on
"The Future of Video" today:
"The AutoHop is a pro-consumer advancement that allows us all to
fast-forward through commercials and makes time-shifting viewing even
easier. Broadcast networks are raising concerns over this new,
compelling technology - just as they did when our industry introduced
the Betamax, the TiVo (News - Alert) and other video recording technologies. We've seen
this show before.
"In every case, these technologies have expanded the video marketplace
and incentivized viewers to watch more television. In addition, in its
Betamax decision, the Supreme Court ruled that the right to record and
fast-forward through broadcast programming was legal and protected
conduct. We ask Congress to recognize AutoHop and other video recording
technologies for what they are: legal and pro-consumer innovations that
increase the marketplace for television."
