Yakima Herald-Republic, Wash., On The Menu column
Jun 28, 2012 (Yakima Herald-Republic - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Famous Burger and Teriyaki doesn't look like much from the outside, but it's one of the best restaurants in Yakima.
The little red and white building at 401 W. Lincoln Ave. across from Safeway is one of those places where people in the know go for good, inexpensive food. The menu includes a crazy mix of good ol' American burgers, starting at $5.79 and going up to $9.99, and Asian dishes such as yakisoba, teriyaki and pho.
The yakisoba, a noodle dish featuring chicken, egg and shrimp, is a relatively new addition to the menu and is served in such a huge portion that you're going to need a takeout box. It's $12.99. The pho, a Vietnamese noodle soup that comes in vegetarian, shrimp, beef and chicken varieties, is a wonder of dynamic flavors and colors.
I got the chicken pho, which cost $8.99 and was more than enough for one lunch. The spiciness of the jalapenos and the citrus tang of the accompanying lime slices just heightened the dish's savory qualities. I could eat pho from Famous Burger every day, but they only serve it Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday.
The ambiance of the joint is straight hole-in-the-wall charm. There are pictures of food covering the walls and odes to its deliciousness written on napkins underneath the glass tabletops. One of them, for instance, reads "#25 is da BOMB!" and features a cartoon bomb in honor of the teriyaki medley. The hospitality of the proprietors matches that charm; they're fast and friendly.
Get in there now, though, because they're going on vacation and will be closed from Wednesday to Aug. 6.
