Balentine to take over as interim Modesto police chief

MODESTO, Jul 11, 2012 (The Modesto Bee - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Modesto police Capt. Gene Balentine will be the interim police chief in Modesto when his boss, Mike Harden, retires early next month.

City Manager Greg Nyhoff announced the appointment during Tuesday evening's council meeting.

Balentine is one of three captains at the department and heads the investigative services division, which includes the violent crimes and special crimes units, property crimes, drugs and narcotics, and the auto theft unit.

The city will conduct a national search to replace Harden, 49, who has served as chief since June 2009 and has worked for the department for 28 years.

The department has more than 300 employees and an annual budget close to $50 million.

Balentine has worked for the city since 1988. He started as a police officer and was promoted to several leadership roles in the department.

"The Police Department is well-positioned to move on," Harden said, speaking at his final council meeting as police chief. "The person chosen as interim chief is tremendously talented." Council members praised Harden for overseeing the department for three years. He was credited for maintaining public safety during a difficult financial time and being the face of Modesto in the community.

Soon after retiring, Harden said, he plans to visit Yankee Stadium and the baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y.
