Research and Markets: Philippines - Telecommunications Infrastructure and Forecasts - 2012

(M2 PressWIRE Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Dublin - Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/7hvr4k/philippines_tele) has announced the addition of the "Philippines - Telecommunications Infrastructure and Forecasts" report to their offering.

The Philippines telecommunications sector has witnessed substantial investment in infrastructure, driven initially by the Service Area Scheme for fixed-line development in the 1990s and, more recently, by the burgeoning mobile telephone market, followed by a surge in interest in mobile broadband services. The fixed-line strategy resulted in a massive under-utilisation of infrastructure, with only 50% occupancy of initially installed fixed-line capacity. Fixed teledensity remained at less than 4% in 2011. By contrast, there has been good progress in the rollout of national fibre optic infrastructure as a number of the larger operators build IP-based Next Generation Networks. This report provides an overview of the local, national and international infrastructure that has been and is being put in place.

Key developments: - The Philippines continues to see a stagnating/shrinking fixed-line market - A number of operators are installing Next Generation Networks (NGNs); the major operators - PLDT and Globe - continue to buy into regional and international submarine cable systems; - The Philippines no longer had a domestic satellite after Agila-2 was removed from service. PLDT was migrating its entire fixed telephony subscriber base to its NGN by 2013 - PLDT became involved in the construction of the Asia Submarine Cable Express (ASE) submarine optical fibre system.

Companies covered in this report include: - PLDT - Smart Communications - Globe Telecom - Digitel - Bell Telecom - Bayantel - ETPI - Liberty Telecom.

Innovative Features Mean Major Savings for Cellular Operators Using Satellite Backhaul
With the rising cost of satellite bandwidth and the need for more of it to support an ever increasing number of voice, data and now video services, operators must seek ways to reduce both their hardware investment costs and operating expenses, especially when fierce competition forces them to provide these new services without raising their rates.
