All aboard! CG provides ship tours
GRAND HAVEN, Aug 03, 2012 (Grand Haven Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
As visitors walked aboard the cutter Neah Bay, Coast Guardsman David Shaw answered questions and allowed people onto the 140-foot ice-breaker.
During this week's Coast Guard Festival, visitors have been able to walk aboard three ships docked at Escanaba Park -- U. S. Coast Guard vessels Neah Bay and Hollyhock, and Canadian Coast Guard cutter Griffon. Tours continue today and Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon, 1-3 p.m. and 6-8 p.m.

Machinery technician 3rd Class Shaw said the people interested in taking the ship tours give his trip to Grand Haven meaning.
"It definitely makes it worth coming here," he said.
Stephanie Weaver of Charlotte said her family attends the Coast Guard Festival every year, and look forward to the ship tours.
"It's always nice when they come in," she said.
As Weaver walked through the Neah Bay with her parents and two children, Chloe and Charlie, she was amazed at the size of the hallways.
"I can't believe they fit in these tiny corridors," Weaver said.
After touring the Hollyhock, Maddy Winter of Casper, Wyo., had to rest and regain her land-legs. She said it was interesting looking at the ship's controls.
"It was neat," Winter said. "They had personnel around answering questions."
Winter toured the ships with Rawlings, Wyo., resident Matt Rader.
"It was cool to see what they actually do," Rader said.
Spring Lake residents Evan Kroeze, 11, and Adam Kroeze, 8, said they visit the ships almost every year. This was the first year their grandmother, Joyce Vredevoogd, went aboard.
Vredevoogd, a Grand Rapids resident, said it was nice having the opportunity to walk aboard the ships.
"Because my brother served in the Marines, anyone who serves our country has a place in my heart," she said.
The Kroeze boys both said the ships are cool.
"The work (they do) is impressive," Adam said.
