BRIEF: Two hikers recovering after being rescued south of Packwood

Aug 15, 2012 (The Olympian (Olympia - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A husband and wife who fell while hiking south of Packwood are being treated for their injuries at Morton General Hospital.

According to the Lewis County Sheriff's Office: The Oklahoma couple were hiking in the Goat Rock area near Hart Lake while hiking through snow fields.

The wife, 58, had cuts on her leg, face and arms after losing her balance trying to help her 62-year-old husband, who slipped and slid down the ice field.

He slid 60 feet, hitting his head on rocks before stopping at the bottom. He also injured his hip.

The pair used a satellite phone to call for help Tuesday night. The Lewis County Sheriff's Office, Lewis County Posse and Packwood Search and Rescue ground teams had trouble locating the couple until doing so Wednesday morning by plane.

The couple called saying they could see the plane at 11:30 a.m. and waved their orange sleeping bag so the pilot could see them. A King County Sheriff's Office helicopter helped hoist the couple to safety.

The pair had packs with food and supplies for a four-day hike and were only hours into their trip when the accident happened. They had hiked in the area before.
