Washington Street bridge closed

CUMBERLAND, Aug 16, 2012 (Cumberland Times-News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Washington Street bridge was declared permanently closed to vehicular traffic Thursday by the city of Cumberland, according to the Allegany County 911 center. Pedestrian traffic will be allowed.

Thursday evening, though, traffic continued to flow across one lane of the bridge, which is said to be deteriorating.

"While the city regrets the inconvenience, public safety is most important and cooperation of the motoring public is appreciated," said Cumberland City Administrator Jeff Rhodes.

At about 10 a.m., the 911 center broadcasted a communication from the city of Cumberland that the bridge has been permanently closed following an engineering inspection of the span.

Motorists are urged to use Allegany, Greene and Lee streets as a detour around the bridge until CSX repairs or replaces the structure.

"It is a significant undertaking to repair or replace the bridge so we expect the bridge to be closed for a while," said Rhodes.

"It's a major problem that won't have an easy fix," City Engineer John DiFonzo said.

He said meetings will be held with CSX as the project to repair or replace the bridge goes through the design and funding phases prior to reaching actual construction. The project is the responsibility of CSX.

The eastbound lane of the span was closed late last month after the condition of the bridge was determined to be deteriorating. City officials said at that time that the steel had deflected and the bridge was in distress.

A similar situation occurred with the Fayette Street bridge in 2004.

Questions about the bridge closing may be directed to DiFonzo at jdifonzo@allconet.org or by phone at 301-759-6601.
