Research and Markets: Malaysia - Broadband Market and Forecasts - 2012

DUBLIN --(Business Wire)--

Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/73xvcq/malaysia) has announced the addition of the "Malaysia - Broadband Market and Forecasts" report to their offering.

Malaysia continues to heavily promote itself as an Information Technology hub in the Asia region. Whilst there had been a good response at a corporate level, for some time the wider community was not really embracing technology. In relative terms, there had been a surprisingly low interest in broadband internet. The fixed broadband penetration was around 7% of the population coming into 2011. This was despite the government having launched a National Broadband Plan which had targeted a 15% penetration by 2010. It has been the widespread adoption of wireless broadband services that has significantly changed the market. Wireless broadband in its ifferent forms is being widely offered by the operators as they increase the capability of their networks.

Another major push towards wider broadband adoption has been prompted by Telekom Malaysia's (News - Alert) roll-out of its fibre-based High-Speed Broadband network. On the back of the broadband boom, and especially the high wireless broadband take up, the government was able to report at the start of 2011 that Malaysia's broadband penetration rate had reached 55.6% surpassing the national target of 50%. In the two years to 2011 there was a 50% increase in household broadband penetration; by end 2011 the household broadband penetration in Malaysia had reached 62%. This report looks at the extent to which high-speed Internet access is developing in the country.

Key Developments:

  • LTE (News - Alert)/4G licences have been awarded to nine companies, effective at the start of 2013
  • Household broadband penetration in Malaysia had reached 63% by early 2012
  • By mid-2012 TM's fibre-based broadband network had passed 1.2 million premises
  • At the same time TM's UniFi service had signed up some 400,000 customers

Innovative Features Mean Major Savings for Cellular Operators Using Satellite Backhaul
With the rising cost of satellite bandwidth and the need for more of it to support an ever increasing number of voice, data and now video services, operators must seek ways to reduce both their hardware investment costs and operating expenses, especially when fierce competition forces them to provide these new services without raising their rates.
