BRIEF: Watch Sen. Jeff Bingaman on 'The Colbert Report' (VIDEO)

Dec 13, 2012 (Albuquerque Journal - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Exiting New Mexico Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D) sparred with the one and only Stephen Colbert last night on "The Colbert Report." Bingaman, who is stepping down and will be succeeded by Martin Heinrich in January, spoke to Colbert on Wednesday night on what the Senate is really like. Colbert is jokingly (we thing) jockeying for South Carolina's open Senate seat.

"You'll fit right in if you don't expect excitement here," Bingman said in the satellite interview.

But Colbert seemed hesitant to serve public office after learning how much (or little) senators make.

"$174,000 a year " Colbert asked. " How do you live Do you guys get food stamps " The Colbert Report Mon -- Thurs 11:30pm / 10:30c Stephen's Appointment with Destiny -- Jeff Bingaman www.colbertnation.com Colbert Report Full Episodes Political Humor & Satire Blog Video Archive ___ (c)2012 the Albuquerque Journal (Albuquerque, N.M.)
