Frontier Communications to Take Part in FCC's Lifeline Broadband Pilot Program
MARION, Ohio --(Business Wire)--
Frontier service territories throughout Ohio and a portion of the
mid-Ohio Valley region of West Virginia have been selected by the
Federal Communications Commission (FCC (News - Alert)) to take part in a pilot program
that will encourage broadband adoption by extending Lifeline discounts
to broadband services for certain customers and promoting digital
literacy.
Frontier will work with Connect Ohio, a nonprofit subsidiary of
Connected Nation (News - Alert), and their Every Citizen Online program to
provide digital training to willing participants with the goal of
demonstrating the value of broadband use, as only 66% of Ohioans
subscribe to broadband service at their home. Since December 2010, Every
Citizen Online has conducted roughly 80,000 hours of training for
200,000 non-subscribing household participants in over 280 locations
throughout Ohio. Frontier will work together with Connected Nation to
provide graduates of Connect Ohio's Every Citizen Online training
program with discounted broadband service and or a free or discounted
computer in select areas of the state
"Frontier is pleased to be taking part in the Lifeline Broadband Pilot
program," said Dave Davidson, Senior Vice President andGeneral
Managerfor Frontier'sOhiooperation. "Frontier's mission is to be the
leading provider of broadband solutions to rural America. The Frontier
team looks forward to helping Ohioans participate in this program, which
will foster economic development and improve the quality of life of
participants throughout the state."
"Connect Ohio is proud to join Frontier Communications in this
innovative broadband pilot program by offering our renowned Every
Citizen Online training and refurbished computer purchase packages,"
said Stu Johnson, executive director of Connect Ohio. "By being awarded
this project, Frontier demonstrates its continued commitment to
connecting those most in need in Ohio and West Virginia while addressing
primary technology barriers - broadband availability, digital literacy
training, computer ownership, and affordable monthly service charges."
The program will kick off in the first half of 2013. Frontier will be
working with partners to publicize the program, and assist with the
application process as details are finalized.
