BRIEF: Blockbuster rental to remain open

Jan 24, 2013 (The Jamestown Sun - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Dish Network Corp., the parent company for Blockbuster, announced Wednesday that it would be closing 300 U.S. Blockbuster stores in the coming weeks. The stores being closed are either under-performing or are coming to the end of their leases. Dish acquired Blockbuster out of bankruptcy in April 2011 for $320 million, the company announced in a press release about the closings.

The Jamestown Blockbuster is owned by Northern State Video. The company has Blockbuster stores in Grand Forks, Fargo and Minnesota. Keven Seeger is one of the owners of Northern State. He said all of the company's Blockbuster stores are doing well, but face competition from online video streaming services like Netflix. Blockbuster offers an on-line streaming service as well.

The Jamestown Blockbuster also sells Dish TV, a satellite television subscription service, and just started selling Dish Internet.

"You will be able to rent DVDs from Blockbuster in Jamestown; that is not changing anytime soon," he said.
