Azerbaijan starts creating low orbit satellite

Feb 11, 2013 (Trend News Agency - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Azerkosmos OJSC has begun making low orbit satellites based on the existing requirements of technical parameters for satellites, the JSC told Trend on Monday.

As part of the work on the launch of sensing satellites, the company conducted a study on the benefits of low orbit satellites in the domestic and foreign markets.

"The results of the tender announced for construction of a low orbit satellite will be made public in the near future. The ground station constructed in Azerbaijan will receive images from the satellites of other countries, as well as meet requirements for optical and radar images in regional markets. It was then the tender for purchase of a universal ground station and provision of services for reception of satellite images from other satellites was announced," the company said.

Azerkosmos OJSC is preparing a business plan noting the possibility of using satellite images in the domestic and regional markets and mentioning its benefits.

Launch of Azerbaijani satellite is scheduled for 2015 and of the second telecommunications satellite in 2016. Launch of several telecommunication satellites is expected in the next few years.

Work on a feasibility study for the project, coordination of orbital positions, obtaining of a new orbital position are currently underway on the launch of the second telecommunications satellite which will be followed by a procurement process.

Commissioning of the first telecommunications satellite Azerspace/Africasat-1 contributes to provision of high-speed Internet access throughout the country.

One of the main benefits of the project is reduction of the cost of building a terrestrial telecommunications infrastructure which in turn helps to reduce tariffs. This will also positively affect the provision of high quality digital broadcast television and HD content Other important benefits of the project are expanding the range of users of the e-government portal, organisation of distance education and e-health, as well as disaster management and emergency response.
