Ogle Township getting high-speed Internet

JOHNSTOWN, Feb 14, 2013 (The Tribune-Democrat - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- High-speed Internet is making its way to Ogle Township.

Verizon Wireless began installing Internet for township residents at the end of December and should have everyone in the rural community who is interested in the service up and running within a few months.

Township supervisor Chairman Harvey Weyandt Jr. said they started looking into bringing the online service to the township in 2011, but Verizon required a certain number of residents to commit to purchasing a plan before they'd begin installation work.

"We tried doing this a couple years back but couldn't get the deal done," he said. "It has been a slow process, but we've been working on it, and our patience has paid off." He said some residents have been using satellite Internet, which is two to three times more expensive, so this will not only save people money but provide them with another option.

"This was much needed," Weyandt said.

"For our little community here it's a big deal." In addition, Verizon plans on building two cellphone towers in the area between Windber and Pleasantville in Bedford County that will better connect Ogle Township.

"There is no cell service here, and if you break down or there's an accident, you're on your own," Weyandt said.

Supervisors were told the project is set to begin soon.

"There is no cost to the township for this service. The only thing we've invested is our time," Weyandt said.

Innovative Features Mean Major Savings for Cellular Operators Using Satellite Backhaul
With the rising cost of satellite bandwidth and the need for more of it to support an ever increasing number of voice, data and now video services, operators must seek ways to reduce both their hardware investment costs and operating expenses, especially when fierce competition forces them to provide these new services without raising their rates.
