NS3 Now Enables Satellite Data Broadcasting at Fiber Level Costs

The results from the independent live testing of NovelSat's (News - Alert) 3G-Sat modulation technology, NS3, have shown that broadcasting data via satellite is now achievable at fiber levels costs. The testing was the work of two organizations – SES (News - Alert), a global satellite company and Satellite Mediaport Services (SMS) of Rugby UK, a data services provider teleport. Being able to broadcast data through satellites at the cost of fiber level broadcasting is now a reality because of NS3’s ability to increase data rates over DVB-S2's capabilities and relative low costs of an inclined orbit space segment.

Simon Gatty Saunt, VP of Sales, Europe and Central Asia at SES said, “SES is committed to the constant search for the best innovations to technology so that we may continue to serve our customers with the highest possible level of service. Novelsat's NS3 satellite modulation technology definitively falls into that category by bringing fiber level costs to satellite broadcasting for the first time, while retaining the inherent value of satellite communications.”

This NS3 testing was done with three versions of SES satellites. The first was the NSS-703 inclined orbit satellite tests that resulted in a 61 percent data rate increase on a 72 MHz transponder. This result was a first, which made fiber level broadcasting costs a possibility. The second was the NSS-5 power limited satellite tests which displayed a 49 percent higher data rate. This was above the present use of the satellite space segment. NovelSat's NS3 powered NS1000 modulator and NS2000 demodulator made it possible for Satellite Mediaport Services teleport to go up into a higher constellation.

This was higher than what it is normally capable of when cutting edge DVB-S2 devices are being used. The third is the NSS-10 satellite whose results were quite the same as the NSS-5 satellite when it had the NS3 devices enabled. NS3 took the teleport to a higher constellation and gave it 55 percent higher data rate over the present satellite space segment use. All of these make use of the sophisticated DVB-S2 devices.
