Russian Space Company Selects ORBIT for Commercial Earth Observation Ground Station Solution

By Deepika Mala, TMCnet Contributor

ORBIT Communication Ltd., a provider of mission-critical connectivity solutions in a variety of markets, has recently been awarded $800,000 contract by STEC.COM LLC, a Russian space company, to supply a commercial ground station solution to support dual communication with Low Earth Orbit and Geostationary Earth Orbit satellites.

The comprehensive and field-proven suite of earth observation ground stations offered by ORBIT enable accurate and continuous communication with LEO satellites in earth observation missions.

Based on the customization of its AL-4300 series, a heavy load, high-performance positioning system, the ORBIT’s innovative solution incorporates both X- and C-band in a single 5.5-meter antenna to overcome the limited size of the Russian ground station.

Officials said that this helps in cutting the ground station's size in half and dramatically reducing its cost.

The company has also developed a special “store and transmit” mechanism that helps gather the data received from the LEO satellite over X-Band, and later transmits that data over C-Band to the GEO satellite on its way to the final destination.

ORBIT’s innovative and reliable solution is well suited to meet Russia's extreme environmental conditions. It operates without failures in strong winds and very low temperatures without a radome.

“In the past year, ORBIT has invested substantial efforts to bolster its presence as an earth observation solution provider, particularly in Europe,” said Avi Cohen, president and CEO of ORBIT, in a release. “Accordingly, we are extremely pleased to announce our first earth observation deal in Russia, which marks an important milestone in this strategic effort. We are confident that this project will lead to additional opportunities in the burgeoning Russian market, as well as other regions in Europe.”

In related news, ORBIT Communication Systems, Inc. showcased its Maritime VSAT Satellite Communications systems product line at Marintec China 2011.

Innovative Features Mean Major Savings for Cellular Operators Using Satellite Backhaul
With the rising cost of satellite bandwidth and the need for more of it to support an ever increasing number of voice, data and now video services, operators must seek ways to reduce both their hardware investment costs and operating expenses, especially when fierce competition forces them to provide these new services without raising their rates.
