Inmarsat Uses Metaswitch to Expand Maritime Broadband Communications
By Kerry Doyle, Contributing Writer
The intersection of VoIP and effective global communications has proven to be a productive area of technology with the increased interaction between multi-national businesses and the explosion of mobile communications worldwide. Broadband data and voice has brought a whole new level of communications to companies that previously relied on traditional methods of commerce.
For smaller companies, broadband communications have provided capabilities previously available to only the largest companies. Metaswitch, a leading provider of global communications services, has recently announced its plan to help the mobile communications company Inmarsat (News - Alert) further develop its FleetBroadband maritime communications bandwidth service.
The term ‘bandwidth’ refers to a range of frequencies through which data is transmitted. The same principles apply for radio, TV and data transmission. A large bandwidth ‘range’ means that more data can be transmitted at one point in time, and thus at greater speed.
Having the bandwidth capability to place simultaneous calls is a major step forward for Inmarsat’s FleetBroadband service. According to Richard Dorey, vice president of sales for EMEA at Metaswitch. “…By using Metaswitch’s exclusive quality assurance tools, Inmarsat will be able to maintain their reputation for superior customer service.”
In order to facilitate expansion of the services, Immarsat will deploy Metaswitch Universal Media Gateways as well as the MetaSphere Multimedia Telephony Application Server (MTAS) at network hubs in Western Europe and the Pacific Rim, with control from Inmarsat’s global headquarters in London. One of the biggest benefits of VoIP is that with the exception of the IP phones, all repairs to the system can be done remotely and with very little effort or expense.
Moreover, Inmarsat’s new ‘FB Multi-voice’ capability will greatly increase the flexibility of FleetBroadband. The technical virtuosity of these systems working in tandem will be the first maritime communications service to provide cost-effective broadband data and voice.
