Coolfire Solutions and Harris Communications Create an Innovative SATCOM Toolkit

By Nick McDonald, Contributing Writer

The U.S. military and corporate engineers have something to be happy about today as the Harris Corporation (News - Alert) and Coolfire Solutions have collaborated to create the first mobile SATCOM toolkit, known as Reconn. The Reconn toolkit will enhance effectiveness and significantly reduce software training time and costs by creating a user-friendly application that runs the Reconn hardware via a smartphone. It also integrates all satellite tools and capabilities into one single package that weighs less than eight lbs. Currently, SATCOM operators must use multiple devices that have different interfaces and carry weight exceeding 100 pounds.

“Reconn brings SATCOM to your smartphone, by combining all the necessary tools into one kit and streamlining operations into simple workflows on a touch screen, this device makes SATCOM operations much more user-friendly, and enables information to be readily shared with engineering and support personnel,” said Sheldon Fox, group president of Harris Government Communication Systems.

By including every tool and capability needed by a SATCOM operator, users will be able to set up, activate, and monitor satellite communication anywhere in the world without having to take months of engineering classes. By ultimately making these capabilities easy to use and smartphone accessible, it will be possible for anyone to set up a satellite link right from a personal computer, laptop, tablet or mobile device. Overall, making it easier for military personnel in rugged, challenging terrain to be able to connect and communicate via satellite, and making it easier for engineers to set up a communication link with a satellite while on the job.

Coolfire Solutions and the Harris Corporation are two companies that specialize in creating software and information technologies for governments and large-scale commercial enterprises. Coolfire has specialized in streamlining satellite technologies in the past, as the company unveiled a precursor to Reconn last May with its SCOUT SATCOM toolkit. SCOUT’s purpose was to streamline satellite technology and with the latest help from the Harris Corporation, Coolfire managed to create an even better toolkit (Reconn) that will surpass last year’s model.

The Harris Corporation is one of the world’s largest military and commercial market suppliers of new and developing information technology. Besides, this latest breakthrough with Coolfire, Harris Corp. (News - Alert) has also recently reached a deal with the Jordan Armed Forces to supply its military with new tactical radios systems that will modernize the communication capabilities of the country’s military. Offering technology assistance to other countries around the world and giving them, the capabilities to use Reconn for military and commercial use in the future.

A recent graduate from the University of Oregon, Nick aspires to build a career in the digital world with a focus on technology, sports, and online media.

Innovative Features Mean Major Savings for Cellular Operators Using Satellite Backhaul
With the rising cost of satellite bandwidth and the need for more of it to support an ever increasing number of voice, data and now video services, operators must seek ways to reduce both their hardware investment costs and operating expenses, especially when fierce competition forces them to provide these new services without raising their rates.
