Iridium to Unveil Revolutionary Global Air Traffic Surveillance

By Carolyn J Dawson, TMCnet Contributor

Iridium (News - Alert) Communications Inc is all set to unveil a ground-breaking development in global air traffic surveillance. A statement regarding the air traffic surveillance system will be made available on Tuesday, June 19, 2012 by IRDM in association with transportation officials and aviation heads.

Enhancements to air travel, as a result of this latest surveillance system, will be discussed by Matt Desch (News - Alert), CEO of IRDM. The launch of the global aviation surveillance system will be made by IRDM at The National Press Club, 529 14th Street Northwest, Washington, DC 20045 on the 19th of June.

A webcast of the historic event will also be made available. Interested viewers can visit the website on June 19.

An appeal to carry out a market survey to locate vendors capable of providing a space-based Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast or ADS-B service was issued by the Federal Aviation Administration, or FAA, in the initial months of 2012. The ADS-B service for remote mountainous areas in the U.S. and oceanic regions should be operational by 2018, thereby augmenting the FAA´s domestic ground-based ADS-B infrastructure. The FAA’s ADS-B infrastructure is expected to be operational by 2013, with the entire deployments expected to be over by 2020.

The latest Iridium NEXT, a revolutionary network from IRDM, was a strong contender as it was expected to be in place by 2017. Apart from the 66 operational spacecraft and six on-orbit spares, the Thales (News - Alert) Alenia-built constellation will feature ADS-B receivers.

Iridium is known for its mobile voice and data satellite communications network across the globe. Real-time connections between people, organizations and assets that are located anywhere across the globe are facilitated by Iridium. A pioneering and loaded portfolio of dependable solutions is offered by Iridium in association with its fast-growing affiliate organizations, thereby fulfilling the communications requirements of markets across the globe.
