An appeal to carry out a market survey to locate vendors capable of providing a space-based Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast or ADS-B service was issued by the Federal Aviation Administration, or FAA, in the initial months of 2012. The ADS-B service for remote mountainous areas in the U.S. and oceanic regions should be operational by 2018, thereby augmenting the FAA´s domestic ground-based ADS-B infrastructure. The FAA’s ADS-B infrastructure is expected to be operational by 2013, with the entire deployments expected to be over by 2020.
The latest Iridium NEXT, a revolutionary network from IRDM, was a strong contender as it was expected to be in place by 2017. Apart from the 66 operational spacecraft and six on-orbit spares, the Thales (News - Alert) Alenia-built constellation will feature ADS-B receivers.
