Molex Incorporated Unveils FAKRA II SMB Connectors for the Automotive Industry

By Shamila Janakiraman, TMCnet Contributor

Molex (News - Alert) Incorporated announced the launch of its FAKRA II SMB connectors which are an upgraded version of the original offering from the company, the FAKRA connector. Besides connectors, Molex also provides complete interconnect solutions for data communications, telecommunications, consumer electronics, industrial, automotive, medical, military and lighting industries.

In a release Roger Kauffman, marketing and sales manager at Molex said, “The FAKRA II connectors answer the automotive industry’s increasing demand for on-board telematic services and connectors that improve functionality at a competitive cost.”

“The system also retains compatibility with the original FAKRA connector, making it ideal for multiple telematic applications including GPS systems, Satellite Radio, cell phones, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and keyless entry, “ Kauffman added.

According to company officials the new connectors have been designed to meet both American and German FAKRA automotive standards. Besides, the connectors will be able to deliver a highly flexible 360 degree rotation for easy routing within the automobile. A secondary plug has been added as a locking latch to make it more reliable.

Greater design flexibility is ensured by the new connector owing to the presence of several keying options and color codes. These also provide easy reference levels. The jacks and plugs are cable mounted to enable easy connections. Also, stamped contacts and machined or die cast bodies have been added which make the connectors affordable when compared to the fully machined FAKRA connectors.

Further the FAKRA II SMB connectors are drop-in replacement type, hence customers will be able to replace a different manufacturer’s FAKRA II connectors with the Molex component conveniently.

Recently Molex announced the introduction of the Precision 2.4mm Compression-Mount Test Connectors , a high-speed vertical PCB launch configuration operating to 50 GHz. The unique vertical PCB launch configuration gives the Precision 2.4 mm Compression-Mount Test Connectors key advantages over more traditional end-launch connectors.

Officials added that the connectors feature a smaller footprint and can be mounted anywhere on the PCB for increased density. Also the compression-mount design eliminates soldering, resulting in reduced installation time.
