DeLorme Creates Partnership with Australian Satellite Service

By Kayvon Ghoreshi, TMCnet Contributing Writer

DeLorme is often known for its handheld GPS devices. To help expand their device capabilities, DeLorme has announced a partnership with Pivotel Satellite, which is an Australian provider of mobile satellite services.

The partnership will have Pivotel providing inReach devices and the DeLorme Explore service portal on local service plans. The inReach devices were revealed last year by DeLorme and are a two way communicator as well as a GPS. It offers text messaging as well as interactive SOS all while leveraging the Iridium (News - Alert) network.

As an added bonus, Pivotel will be offering inReach devices with TracerTrak. This is Pivotel’s enterprise remote worker safety solution which provides affordable two-way satellite and safety communication. As you can imagine, this kind of device isn’t for everyone. It is mainly being offered to consumers that enjoy adventuring and exploring areas that may be off the grid. They are also sold to many industry workers in mining and oil rigging and even certain government employees.

The partnership with Pivotel will greatly assist DeLorme in expanding their vendors. In addition to being offered by Pivotel, the inReach devices will also be sold through Pivotel’s network of over 200 value-added resellers strategically located in Australia, New Zealand and Indonesia.

The move by DeLorme is a very good one. Its devices and products aren’t exactly mass market. Not everyone needs a satellite communication device or can afford one. For that reason they need to focus on a more niche market. Pivotel not only makes inReach devices more appealing to the niche market with the addition of its TracerTrak feature, but makes it more available with the new vendors it brings to the table as well.

Currently the partnership mainly consists of inReach devices but there is still a great chance that future DeLorme projects and products will make use of Pivotel’s services.
