Norsat Fulfills NCI Agency's Criteria for Satellite Terminals

By Carolyn J Dawson, TMCnet Contributor

Norsat International (News - Alert), Inc. has successfully fulfilled the rigorous in-field testing conditions stipulated by the NATO Communications and Information (NCI) Agency.

The NCI Agency has awarded the Final Acceptance to Norsat for their customizable dual Ku and X Band portable satellite terminals.

In August 2011, the NCI Agency awarded a contract worth $1.3 million to Norsat for the provision of satellite-based communications equipment and service. The firm has developed portable satellite terminals, customized to meet the precise requirements of the NCI Agency.

The NCI Agency program now incorporates the Dual-Band Auto-acquisition Rapid-deployable Terminals (DART+) from Norsat. Since January 2012, DART+ has been implemented by the NCI Agency in active combat locations.

The transmission of data, voice and telecommunications across the line areas is possible with the terminals, allowing NATO's NCI Agency to start communications anywhere, irrespective of infrastructure accessibility or environmental surroundings.

"We were pleased to win the contract to work with NATO's NCI Agency last year, and achieving Final Acceptance for the DART+ obviously marks a significant milestone for the project,” said Amiee Chan, president and CEO at Norsat. “Norsat worked exclusively with NATO to design and develop the innovative DART+ product, which now meets the challenging requirements of the NCI Agency. The end result is a fit for purpose terminal, which is currently used to provide valuable communications in theatre."

Other NATO member countries can also avail the Norsat DART+ offering as a portable communications solution, which can be easily implemented. This offering is capable of offering video, voice and data connectivity, anywhere across the globe.

The NCI Agency is an institution of the NATO. The NCI Agency offers best-in-class technology, assisting NATO’s critical missions and assessments. NATO’s Allied Command Operations and Alliance Command Transformations are the main customers of the Agency.

Norsat is a major provider of ground-breaking communication offerings. Transportable ground station satellite terminals, antennas, Radio Frequency conditioning offerings, microwave machinery, maritime based satellite terminals and remote network connectivity solutions are designed, developed, manufactured, marketed and supported by Norsat.

Innovative Features Mean Major Savings for Cellular Operators Using Satellite Backhaul
With the rising cost of satellite bandwidth and the need for more of it to support an ever increasing number of voice, data and now video services, operators must seek ways to reduce both their hardware investment costs and operating expenses, especially when fierce competition forces them to provide these new services without raising their rates.
