Tactical Systems Go Consumer
By Katie Gatto, TMCnet Contributor
Parvus may not be a name that you have heard in the past, unless you have spent a lot of time looking at military computer hardware, but it is a leading provider of constrained military, aerospace, and homeland defense hardware and systems. The company, which focuses on systems that are designed to make it through the worst without failing systems, is now making a model that will be available to consumers off of the shelf. So those of you who have always wanted to have your own tactical systems now is the time to start saving up.
The system being released by the company has been dubbed the DuraCOR 80-40. The system is powered by a pair of Intel (News
- Alert) Core i7 Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge processors that are designed to allow the system to function in real time. The system also features a high-speed, stackable PCI (News - Alert)-Express bus, which means it is set up for future I/O card expansion. Other specs of note include the dual slots for adding in 2.5" SATA solid state disks in the back of the machine and an impressive array of other input options including: 2x Gigabit Ethernet, 6x USB, 2x RS-232 Serial, 16x Discrete DIO, Analog Video, Digital DVI, Stereo Audio, and PS2.
In a release, the company describes the system in the following terms, "Optimally designed for Size, Weight, and Power (SWaP)-sensitive mobile, airborne, ground, manned or unmanned vehicle applications, the DuraCOR 80-40 combines powerful graphics and multi-core processing with ultra-reliable mechanical robustness and modular I/O expansion for extreme environmental and EMI performance per MIL-STD-810G (thermal, shock, vibration, dust, water, humidity) and MIL-STD-461F."
The product will not be out until sometime in the fourth quarter.
