Nokia and Oracle Team Up for Inks Map

By Shankar Pandiath, TMCnet Contributor

Nokia (News - Alert) Oyj recently announced that it has commenced a new partnership with Oracle Corporation (ORCL) for intensifying its customer base and establishing a strong hold on the market for its Ink Maps. In 2008, the Finnish mobile phone company purchased Navteq, a globally renowned digital mapping firm for about $8 billion. Since, then it has devised numerous business plans for promoting and augmenting its mapping services. Recently, Nokia had also signed contracts with Amazon and Groupon Inc. for pursuing the same efforts.

In contrast to Nokia’s struggling mobile phone operations as of late, its automotive navigation sector has boosted sales by four percent, and has built brand visibility through Nokia Ink Maps integrated into its products.

Stephen Elop, the chief executive officer of Nokia, had set up a partnership with Microsoft (News - Alert) Corp. (MSFT) sometime during 2011 to produce smartphones using Microsoft’s Windows Phone software and supply services including map data as part of his turnaround plan.

In addition to its regular features, Nokia Ink Maps offer free services to its device users for live traffic information, satellite maps, terrain maps, 3D buildings and maps, and street navigation with voice guidance.

In an effort to popularize the application of Nokia Ink Maps in the United States, Oracle (News - Alert) has created a linkage between Nokia Location Platform software and its own mobile products line. It will allow the U.S. entrepreneurs to access the mapping application on their Oracle patented devices. The two companies entered into the new joint venture to deliver Nokia’s Mapping Service across all Oracle’s products and service locations.

The reports of Nokia-Oracle partnership came to light, soon after Tim Cook, the chief executive officer of Apple (News - Alert) Inc. announced the limitations of Apple Maps, their own mobile mapping service.
