Space Data Corporation Uses Lemko's DiMoWiNe Solution to Bring High-Speed Internet to Remote Alaska

By Madhubanti Rudra, TMCnet Contributor

Thanks to collaboration between Space Data Corporation (News - Alert) and Lemko Corporation, the people in remote Atqasuk, Alaska will now enjoy access to high-speed Internet.

In collaboration with Lemko, Space Data Corporation has deployed a satellite-based commercial LTE (News - Alert) network for the first time in the region’s history.

The project is believed to provide the region’s subscribers with mobile broadband data speeds of over 70Mbps, according to a statement.

For these remote areas, the fiber or cell tower deployments are mostly impossible. Sometimes they are not economically viable. But leveraging Lemko’s DiMoWiNe (Distributed Mobile Wireless Network) software solution, Space Data, a carrier that focuses on delivering low-cost solutions for rural and remote areas, was able to economically deploy LTE using satellite.

Space Data delivers its services over its high-altitude SkySite Network. The company takes pride in its proprietary communications platforms, which can be launched within minutes by just one person from almost anywhere. This makes a far quicker and more economic alternative than launching a satellite or erecting a new cellular tower.

The company also provides secure, wide-area wireless communications services to the military, public safety agencies, homeland security organizations and industry, as well as individual consumers.

The newly deployed satellite LTE network is powered by Lemko's patented DiMoWiNe (Distributed Mobile Wireless Network) software solution, a virtualized core software program designed to reduce the network's signaling traffic.

Collocated at the eNodeB, the solution helps virtualize the core so that all switching and routing in the network is moved to the network's edge. This creates a LTE solution with greater latency tolerances and the ability to deliver mobile broadband over satellite.

A few months ago, Lemko Corp announced another 4G broadband innovation by demonstrating interoperability between 700 MHz LTE lower band classes.

Innovative Features Mean Major Savings for Cellular Operators Using Satellite Backhaul
With the rising cost of satellite bandwidth and the need for more of it to support an ever increasing number of voice, data and now video services, operators must seek ways to reduce both their hardware investment costs and operating expenses, especially when fierce competition forces them to provide these new services without raising their rates.
