Inmarsat Selects SingTel as its Value Added Reseller

By Rahul Arora, TMCnet Contributor

Inmarsat (News - Alert), a provider of global mobile satellite communications services, recently signed a value added reseller (VAR) agreement with Singapore Telecommunications Limited (SingTel (News - Alert)) for Global Xpress, a Ka-band technology-based solution that will deliver the fastest speeds through more compact terminals at a lower cost than existing VSAT services.

Scheduled for service introduction in 2014, Global Xpress will offer an unprecedented combination of high data rates, bandwidth and global coverage. Inmarsat's new satellite network aligns with the trend by governments worldwide to shift operations to Ka-band and will provide super-fast uplink and downlink data rates, all backed by Inmarsat quality standards, performance and global reach.

Inmarsat's Global Xpress partner companies will manufacture interoperable maritime, aeronautical and commercial land satellite terminals.

Andrew Lim, managing director of Business Group, SingTel Group Enterprise said: "We are delighted to be the first Telco in Asia to be appointed a Global Xpress VAR. By harnessing our Telco and ICT capabilities in combination with Global Xpress, we are now able to offer our maritime customers a fully integrated end-to-end solution. The maritime industry is facing unprecedented challenges and opportunities created by rapidly changing technologies.”

“Together, Global Xpress and SingTel will be able to lead the change and revolutionize the future of maritime communication, which is an exciting prospect for our customers," he said.

"This agreement is the natural result of decades of successful cooperation between SingTel and Inmarsat," said Frank Coles, president of Inmarsat Maritime. "SingTel has an extensive knowledge of the Asian and Australian markets with a wide distribution network through which to deliver Global Xpress. SingTel is the preeminent communication solution provider in Asia and the ideal partner to introduce Asia's growing maritime market to the potential of Global Xpress's superior high bandwidth value."

In related news, Inmarsat recently signed L-3 Global Communications Solutions (GCS (News - Alert)) as an initial launch partner for land satellite terminals for its forthcoming Global Xpress service. Global Xpress is the only global Ka-band system of its kind, and will support L-3 GCS (News - Alert) customers who have become accustomed to highly transportable, rugged and reliable terminals for all kinds of missions.
