Globecomm Bags $4.5M Force Tracking System-Upgrade Contract from NATO

By Madhubanti Rudra, TMCnet Contributor

Globecomm Systems, Inc. is a global communication solution provider that previously installed a GPS-Based Force tracking System (FTS (News - Alert)) for NATO, and has now bagged a $4.5 million upgrading contract.

NATO Communications and Information Agency’s (NCI Agency) upgrade is aimed at making the GPS-FTS system fit for handling additional communications traffic. The system up-gradation involves adding advanced features and expanding the capacity of the system.

Under the terms of the previous contact, valued at approximately $61.3 million, Globecomm designed and installed a GPS FTS for NATO. The system provided the organization with high levels of tracking capabilities for data and messaging traffic, giving it the ability to identify where its personnel are located at all times and identify other multinational forces.

With this GPS FTS, tracking was possible for both routine and operational situations, giving NATO an ability of great military significance. It assisted this multinational military organization in identifying friendly forces and preventing fratricide or “blue-on-blue” incidents.

“Globecomm has been providing this important service to this customer for more than 5 years. This upgrade is required to allow the system to handle additional communications traffic as well as replace equipment that has reached its’ end of serviceable life. Globecomm is pleased to continue to support this customer in providing these critical services,” vice president of Globecomm’s Eastern Atlantic Team, Paul Knudsen, said in a statement.

Earlier this month, Globecomm announced the hiring of Brian Morris as senior vice president of its Media and Entertainment market channel, reporting to Keith Hall, president and chief operating officer. In this new role, Morris was given the responsibility to shape Globecomm's strategic direction and businesses initiatives focused on serving Content Providers and Service Providers on a global basis, and leveraging Globecomm's expertise in engineering, design, provisioning and support of video distribution networks into adjacent market verticals.
