KVH Upgrades mini-VSAT Broadband Network to Provide 60 Percent More Capacity for EMEA Customers

KVH Industries (News - Alert), Inc. recently completed an upgrade to the mini-VSAT Broadband network with the aim of increasing satellite capacity to 60 percent for customers in Europe, the Middle East and northern Africa (EMEA).

Spreading and Modulation (VCSM) technology from ViaSat (News - Alert), Inc. was implemented to deliver the increased capacity, bandwidth within two separate regions, unified into a single beam and Variable Coding.

In a statement, Marc Edwards, KVH's director of network operations, said that, "We actively monitor and manage our mini-VSAT Broadband network to ensure we are delivering the speeds and quality of service our customers expect. Rapid growth of our customer base, which now includes well over 2,500 systems in the field, resulted in increased utilization of the network during peak periods in the EMEA region. We reconfigured our satellite coverage to more effectively serve this region with a single beam, which allows the ViaSat ArcLight spread spectrum technology used in our network to more efficiently carry the traffic."

In the coming months, VCSM will be introduced for the rest of the mini-VSAT Broadband network. The KVH mini-VSAT Broadband network leverages C-band and Ku-band satellite capacity, delivered by a number of commercial satellite operators such as Intelsat (News - Alert), Eutelsat, SES and SKY Perfect JSAT. 

At present, 14 satellite transponders support the delivery of KVH's Ku-band capacity, offering one of the most extensive coverage areas of any Ku-band network.

KVH, which included three global C-band beams to the mini-VSAT Broadband network, has become the first and only maritime VSAT service leveraging a one-meter antenna to offer robust global coverage beyond the Polar Regions.

KVH has developed three onboard antennas for the mini-VSAT Broadband network, which include a new enterprise-grade TracPhone V7-IP; the compact TracPhone V3; and the new dual-mode TracPhone V11.
