Globalstar Signs New VAM Deal with KFT SpA

By Monica Gleberman, Contributing Writer

Globalstar (News - Alert) Europe Satellite Services Ltd. has signed a VAM (value added manufacturer) deal with Italy’s KFT SpA. The new partnership will require Globalstar and KFT to work together on developing a new M2M tracking device that will work with Globalstar’s STXII chip set.

“We are delighted to be working with KFT and expanding Globalstar’s reach into Eastern Europe and the Middle East with this revolutionary new M2M tracking device,” said Mark O’Connell, director European Sales & Business Operations, Globalstar Europe Satellite Services Ltd.

Globalstar, specializes in providing satellite voice and data services. In 2010, the company released its second-generation satellite constellation designed to “restore its industry leading commercial voice and duplex data services.” The launch sent a low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation for satellite phones and low-speed data communications into the Orbcomm satellite systems. The company has already had eight successful satellites deployed and plans on launching an additional six satellites at the beginning of the New Year.

Davide Gorla, VP & sales manager, KFT SpA, said the launches were one of the reasons his company agreed on the partnership. “In light of the considerable efforts that are being made by Globalstar to consolidate and improve their LEO communications offering, we felt it was crucial to become a business integration partner. This partnership enables us to offer a more complete and global solution to our customers worldwide,” said Gorla.

As part of the agreement, the two companies will market the new technology to the government, maritime, transportation, defense, and mining sectors throughout the Middle East, Europe, and Eastern Europe.

“After the new constellation is launched and fully deployed we expect to once again reliably provide the world’s finest quality mobile satellite voice and fastest mobile satellite handset data services to commercial and government customers in more than 12 countries,” said president of Global Operations, Tony Navarra. “Combined with our affordable and award-winning consumer retail SPOT products, Globalstar will unquestionably offer the world’s most extensive lineup of high quality mobile satellite services.”
