Gilat Satellite Deploys SkyEdge VSATs for the Mexican Government SCT 10K Initiative

By Shamila Janakiraman, TMCnet Contributor

ALEF Soluciones Integrales, a supplier of integrated information technology solutions; and GSAT Comunicaciones, a satellite service provider in Mexico, have picked Gilat Satellite Networks (News - Alert) to deploy over 7,000 SkyEdge VSATs to support the ‘SCT 10K’ service launched by the Mexican government.

Gilat specializes in satellite networking technology, solutions and services, and will power the ‘SCT 10K’ service, a ministry of communication and transportation initiative. Services include the provision of satellite-based broadband Internet connectivity to rural classrooms and government offices.

Angel Ruiz (News - Alert), ALEF's General Manager said, “Gilat and ALEF have a long standing relationship. Their faultless execution of previous projects, coupled with our familiarity of the integration capabilities and performance of the SkyEdge platform, allowed us the confidence to select Gilat as a premier vendor for this important national initiative.”

Within four weeks, Gilat delivered and installed a new hub at the GlobalSat teleport in Tijuana to keep up with the tight deployment schedules given by ALEF. The project includes the implementation of Gilat SkyEdge WebEnhance VSAT that can deliver data rates of up to 2 Mbps.

According to officials, WebEnhance features upgradeable, high-capacity memory and is most suitable for e-Education programs, where broadband connectivity is provided for multiple PC environments.

In the case of providing Internet access for rural classrooms or for delivering a range of government services to citizens, governments require a solution that is cost effective, and quick and easy to deploy.

Russell Ribeiro, regional vice president of Gilat Latin America, said, “Satellite-based communication is proving a fundamental part of any government initiative to promote the advancement of public access to communication.”

Wavestream, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Gilat Satellite Networks, has been awarded an exclusive contract by Honeywell (News - Alert) to supply Ka-band transceivers for integration into airborne antenna systems to provide in-flight connectivity to the Inmarsat Global Xpress network.
