Satellite Equipment Specialist Newtec Signs Agreement with NCIA

By Anil Sharma, TMCnet Contributor

Newtec (News - Alert), a developer of satellite communication products and networks, recently signed a basic ordering agreement with the NATO Communications and Information Agency (NCIA). Officials with Newtec said the aim of the contracting procedure is to provide an accelerated and cost-effective acquisition method for Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) hardware, software and services.

"Newtec has an outstanding reputation for its quality and reliability in the satellite market and a rich portfolio of COTS products and solutions perfect for government and defense applications. These products serve as building blocks or turnkey systems for satellite networks, so it makes sense for NATO to have fast and reliable access to our latest equipment," said Koen Willems, market director for government and defense at Newtec, in a statement.

Serge Van Herck, CEO of Newtec said that as a long-term partner to many government and defense organizations operating within NATO, this agreement will serve to streamline the process and reduce barriers for forces and countries wanting to benefit from the COTS.

“Extensive satcom research and development ensure that our technology is at the leading edge for high throughput and efficiency, ensuring the highest service availability and reliability," said Serge Van Herck.

Earlier in January Newtec was selected by Gazprom Space Systems (GSS) in a competitive tendering process to provide the equipment for a new VSAT Platform to be run via the Yamal-402 satellite.

Contracts have been signed making Newtec the preferred partner of choice to provide the complete VSAT system including hub, modems and antennas for the project.

Russia is a large country and having Internet access in the remote areas at an affordable price is essential. Until this year, only expensive professional VSAT installations in limited hot spots in the Moscow and Saint Petersburg regions were available.

GSS plans to offer satellite broadband access services to local ISPs that will in turn supply services to consumers and enterprise customers within the Yamal-402 footprint, which covers the whole of Russian territory.
