Beam Communications and Beijing MCN Enter Agreement Over Supply of Inmarsat Marine Satellite Terminals

By Calvin Azuri, TMCnet Contributor

Beam Communications Pty Ltd. was recently contracted by Beijing Marine Communications & Navigation Company for supplying it with an initial $1 million of Beam Inmarsat (News - Alert) marine satellite terminals.

The decision to partner with Beam follows the successful trial of Inmarsat FleetPhone Service-based 200 Beam Oceana 400 and Oceana 800 marine communications terminals aboard fishing vessels in China.

Beam Communications is a wholly owned subsidiary of World Reach Limited.

In a statement, Yumin Zhao, Director at MCN, said that, "MCN is very pleased to be entering this contract with Beam for an additional commitment USD$1M of Beam Oceana terminals following the successful trial with our customers and channel partners in China. There are many thousands of fishing vessels in China that have a need for high-quality and reliable satellite communications along with land-based applications in smaller villages. MCN will be targeting these key land and maritime customers with an aggressive campaign to promote exclusively the Beam products and we are anticipating this to be very successful, therefore would anticipate placing additional orders with Beam in the coming months.”

Beam designed the terminals specifically to provide voice, data and tracking communications support. All communication was carried through the Inmarsat satellite network, which is based on the company’s "Fleetphone" maritime service.

The company launched these terminals within the global market in late 2011 with the intention of targeting high-volume deployments across new and emerging satellite markets.

In the last two years, Beam has been concentrating on harnessing new market opportunities within emerging Asian markets, including China and Japan. With the signing of this agreement with MCN, Beam has consolidated its position within the market as a leading provider of satellite communication solutions for both the Inmarsat and Iridium (News - Alert) satellite networks across the globe.

The company will deliver the initial order of $1 million to MCN this quarter, and is expecting to complete it by May 31.
