Aircell Now Completely Owns Airfone Business Unit of LiveTV

By Nathesh, TMCnet Contributor

Aircell, a Gogo company and a provider of in-flight connectivity equipment and services, reported that it has completed the acquisition of the Airfone business unit of LiveTV, a JetBlue Airways Corporation’s subsidiary.

Aircell maintained that the transition of the LiveTV Airfone business unit into the Aircell family will be made easy so that customers will not feel any hindrance and they will also be enjoying significant incentives from a brand new generation of in-flight connectivity.

With a history dating back to the 1970s, the Airfone service currently operates on frequencies adjacent to those utilized by Aircell’s Gogo Biz in-flight Internet service in the business aviation market – as well as Gogo in the commercial airline market.

Recently Gogo announced that it will acquire Airfone’s network infrastructure, as well as a 1 MHz spectrum license currently held by LiveTV and Gogo already has a 3 MHz license. The acquisition is expected to play an integral role in Gogo’ continued expansion activities and help it deliver a performance boost for end users.

John Wade, executive vice president and general manager of Aircell said, “We’re delighted to welcome Airfone customers and dedicated employees to the Aircell family. In-flight communications have become an indispensable part of the business aviation experience. To ensure operators aren’t without needed communications capabilities after the December 31 Airfone service shutdown, customers with MagnaStar units are encouraged to begin planning their transition now.”

As part of Aircell’s repurposing of the former LiveTV air-to-ground frequencies, all Airfone service will cease on December 31, 2013 and subscribers have been advised to learn more from the newly commissioned Airfone transition website and accordingly prepare plans soon to remain connected in the air.
