By Ashok Bindra, TMCnet Contributor

To focus on core vertical markets, global mobile satellite communications services provider Inmarsat (News - Alert) has formed a new organizational structure. The new structure will including Inmarsat’s subsidiary companies and align them more closely to support both direct and indirect distribution of its services under the Inmarsat brand said the service provider.

The new Inmarsat Solutions will be headed by Jim Parm, who is also responsible for the company’s global direct and indirect sales and marketing.  Under the new structure, Inmarsat Solutions will operate through four new market-focused business units.

These include: Inmarsat Maritime, led by Frank Coles, with focus on worldwide commercial maritime opportunities; Inmarsat Government US, led by Mike Wheeler, with focus on US government opportunities (military and civil);Inmarsat Government Global, led on an interim basis by Ronald Spithout, with focus on worldwide ( non-US) civil and military government opportunities; and Inmarsat Enterprise, led by Ronald Spithout, with focus on worldwide enterprise, energy, media, carriers, commercial aviation and M2M opportunities.

Inmasat said that the newly formed global business units will be supported by a new group, Commercial Services & Support. According to the mobile satellite communications provider, the new group will provide cross-business unit services such as customer support, product and service management, channel development, commercial management and marketing communications.

With the new organization, the subsidiaries Stratos (News - Alert), Segovia, and Ship Equip will provide  their services under relevant business unit and will use the Inmarsat brand name, said Inmarsat.

While global mobile and fixed satellite communications provider Stratos was acquired by Inmarsat in April 2009, Segovia (News - Alert), a secure end-to-end communication provider to US government’s strategic and tactical initiatives worldwide, was purchased by Inmarsat in January 2010. Likewise, Ship Equip, a VSAT maritime communications services provider to the shipping, offshore oil and gas and fishing markets, was brought on board in April 2011.

In a statement, said Rupert Pearce, CEO, Inmarsat, "Inmarsat has been delivering mission-critical satellite communications services for customers who operate beyond the reach of terrestrial networks for more than three decades."  He added, "We have led the mobile satellite services market as a wholesale organization. This restructure will build on that by bringing us closer to our partners and customers, making us more responsive to their needs and more efficient in the delivery of our services.”
