ViaSat Unveils High-Speed, Affordable Exede Internet Service

By Tammy Wolf, TMCnet Web Editor

Do you have a need for speed? No, we’re not talking about getting behind the wheel of a Porsche GT2 RS – we’re referring to your broadband connectivity.

If so, you’re in luck because ViaSat (News - Alert), Inc., a satellite broadband technology company known for its fast, secure communications and networking products, has revealed beginning Jan. 16, it will offer Exede, an Internet service delivering speeds up to 12 megabits per second downstream, and up to 3 Mbps upstream.

ViaSat’s reputation for robust satellite broadband products and services goes all the way back to 2008, when the company introduced its next-generation satellite system, representing a milestone capacity leap on the satellite technology grid. The system, which the company claims has transformed the market, integrates its high-capacity satellite ViaSat-1 with an advanced, next-generation ground system.

“With our new Exede broadband service, customers across the United States will have a way to get exceptional speed whether they live in a city, suburbs or a more rural area,” said Tom Moore, senior vice president of ViaSat, in a press release. “Our new Exede service speeds make us very competitive with wireless home broadband service, as well as legacy DSL and many cable services.”

In addition to high-speed capabilities, the Exede service also offers a “fiber-like” Web browsing experience, even on media and video-intensive websites, thanks to advanced Web acceleration technology.

The new Exede service starts at a price point of $50 per month for the 7.5 GB package, and increases depending on monthly data allowances. Users will pay $80 for the 15 GB package, or $130 for the 26 GB offering. According to ViaSat officials, these data allowances for the service were established in such a manner that a mix of speed and volume can be available to a large segment of the nation’s characteristic broadband customers.

Innovative Features Mean Major Savings for Cellular Operators Using Satellite Backhaul
With the rising cost of satellite bandwidth and the need for more of it to support an ever increasing number of voice, data and now video services, operators must seek ways to reduce both their hardware investment costs and operating expenses, especially when fierce competition forces them to provide these new services without raising their rates.
