Samsung's Wave3 Smartphones to Integrate TomTom's Navigation Software

By Madhubanti Rudra, TMCnet Contributor

Samsung (News - Alert) has inked a deal with the global supplier of location and navigation products and services TomTom (News - Alert) for its Wave3 smartphones. Thanks to the strategic agreement, users of Samsung Wave3 smartphones will get access to TomTom's global maps, point of interest information, 3D city maps as well as live traffic updates and speed camera notifications. This will help meet the users’ daily location needs in their navigation to search and find.

There has been no announcement whether the service will be free, but given the competing Android (News - Alert) and Nokia's free GPS apps, Wave3 users can well hope for the best.

“As we strive to deliver innovations for the global smartphone market, location-enabled content and applications are increasingly important to our customers. We needed a partner that could deliver to our strict requirements for quality and TomTom rose to the occasion,” David Noh, vice president and head of Technology Alliance Group (News - Alert) explained in a press release.

The agreement enables Wave3 users get map coverage for over 200 countries globally, providing over 35 million kilometers of road network.

Points of Interest information will enable users to find the people, places and services they need, wherever they are. With 3D City Maps and 3D Landmarks, it will be more convenient for the users to recognize what they are looking for.

With Enterprise Traffic feature, the users will get live information about road conditions, including the location and length of a traffic incident, helping drivers find the quickest route to their destination.

Those who are concerned about driving safety will benefit from the TomTom Speed Cameras that provide a location alert for encouraging safe driving habits.

In other news, TomTom has been cooperating with the Dutch Data Protection Authority (the “CBP”) in recent months to confirm TomTom is fully compliant with privacy laws. The Data Protection Authority found that TomTom has never shared its customers' private location data with third parties.

It also states that TomTom should be clearer in communicating to its customers about how their data is used to generate TomTom's mapping, routing and traffic services.
