TerreStar, which is currently developing an all-IP integrated satellite-terrestrial communications network, intends to offer services to commercial, government, rural and public safety sectors throughout North America.
Satellite communications can offer these sectors enhanced disaster preparedness and emergency response capabilities by providing reliable communications if any incident affects the availability of a terrestrial network.
The company has announced that they will launch their TerreStar-1 satellite in the second quarter of 2009 and complete final testing soon after the launch. They have also decided that the initial TerreStar-enabled handsets will be standard size Windows Mobile enabled PDAs. These handsets will boast full QWERTY keyboard, touchscreen and multi-band capability.

TerreStar is a majority-owned subsidiary of TerreStar Corporation. The company plans to build, own and operate North America's first 4G integrated mobile satellite and terrestrial communications network that will provide universal access and tailored applications throughout North America over conventional wireless devices.
TerreStar Corporation recently enhanced its nationwide spectrum footprint by obtaining certain 1.4 GHz spectrum licenses held by EchoStar Corporation and CCTV Wireless I, LLC (CCTV). The company reportedly acquired the CCTV 1.4 GHz spectrum pursuant to an assignment from Harbinger Capital Partners Master Fund I, Ltd. and Harbinger Capital Partners Special Situations Fund, LP (collectively, Harbinger).
Jeffrey Epstein, TerreStar president said in a statement that this enhanced nationwide spectrum footprint can help their company to accomplish its mission to offer reliable, interoperable satellite-terrestrial communications for the commercial, government, rural and public safety sectors throughout North America.
