TeleCable to Deploy Eutelsat's Tooway Consumer Satellite Broadband Service

By Niladri Sekhar Nath, TMCnet Contributor

Telecable, a provider of cable and Internet services in Asturias, is set to deploy the Tooway satellite broadband service in Asturias (a northern region of Spain). Teaming with Skylogic (Eutelsat's (News - Alert) broadband affiliate), the company is set to deploy 6000 Tooway terminals throughout the region to deliver broadband to homes located in non-served ADSL areas.

"We are delighted to start commercialization of Tooway in Spain with our agreement with TeleCable for the Asturias region,” said Arduino Patacchini, CEO of Skylogic and multimedia director of Eutelsat. “This confirms the validity of choosing the Ka-band for broadband applications, which is the only solution capable of offering performance and prices for consumer satellite broadband that is comparable to terrestrial broadband services."

Eutelsat Communications is the holding company of Eutelsat S.A. (News - Alert) With capacity commercialized on 24 satellites that provide coverage over the entire European continent, as well as the Middle East, Africa, India and significant parts of Asia and the Americas, Eutelsat is one of the world's three major satellite operators in terms of revenues.

Eutelsat's satellites broadcast more than 3,120 television channels and 1,100 radio stations. More than 1,100 channels broadcast via its HOT BIRD video neighborhood at 13 degrees east which serves over 120 million cable and satellite homes in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. The satellites also serve a wide range of fixed and mobile telecommunications services, TV contribution markets, corporate networks, and broadband markets for Internet Service Providers and for transport, maritime and in-flight markets.

The Tooway system is based on ViaSat's (News - Alert) SurfBeam technology, a comprehensive technology for largescale deployment already widely deployed in the USA by Wildblue which counts 400 000 subscribers.

"This is a significant step towards bridging the digital divide in Spain and we are particularly pleased with our cooperation with Eutelsat and Skylogic in this area. We also look forward to the arrival in 2010 of KA-SAT, the revolutionary satellite that will provide us with the possibility to serve even better Spanish homes," said Roberto Paraja CEO of TeleCable. “By signing this agreement, TeleCable will be able to offer broadband connectivity in the countryside.”

Innovative Features Mean Major Savings for Cellular Operators Using Satellite Backhaul
With the rising cost of satellite bandwidth and the need for more of it to support an ever increasing number of voice, data and now video services, operators must seek ways to reduce both their hardware investment costs and operating expenses, especially when fierce competition forces them to provide these new services without raising their rates.
