Gilat Wins Additional Satellite Deals from Kazakhtelecom

By Narayan Bhat, TMCnet Contributor

Israel’s satellite communication service provider, Gilat Satellite Networks, has signed another new deal with Kazakhstan's largest telecom operator, Kazakhtelecom. This time, Gilat will expand an existing SkyEdge network, enabling the Kazakhtelecom (KT (News - Alert)) to cater to a wider array of customers in the remote rural villages of this Eurasian nation.

The latest contract is the part of Universal Service Obligation (USO) and is designed to beef up the Eurasian wireless carrier to provide telephony and broadband Internet services to remote communities as well as businesses.

According to KT, Gilat's SkyEdge VSATs meet the USO requirements and they are ideally suited for Kazakhstan’s harsh terrain and severe weather conditions.

“Gilat's SkyEdge network, based on advanced VSAT technology and experience, enables us to continue to provide the highest level of customer service while meeting the complex networking requirements of Kazakhstan’s enterprises, government agencies and consumers,” said KT Chief Technical Director Lezgovko Aleksandr Vladimirovich.

Arie Rozichner, Gilat’s regional vice president said, “Gilat's VSAT technology provides an excellent solution for KT, enabling the delivery of cost-effective, high-speed Internet and telephony services to citizens amid Kazakhstan’s harsh terrain and severe weather conditions. We look forward to continuing our market leadership in Kazakhstan and helping KT improve the quality of life for citizens in the most remote regions of the country."

Gilat’s SkyEdge is a satellite communications system that delivers high-quality voice, broadband data and video services over a unified system. Moreover, SkyEdge’s flexible architecture and efficient space segment utilization make it an ideal choice for operators like KT.

With more than two million subscribers in urban areas and 450,000 in countryside, Kazakhtelecom is Kazakhstan’s largest provider of telecommunications services.

Gilat’s subsidiary, Spacenet offers rural telephony and Internet access solutions to remote areas, primarily in Latin America. Founded in 1987, Gilat has shipped over 750,000 Very Small Aperture Terminals (VSATs) to more than 85 countries across six continents.

Innovative Features Mean Major Savings for Cellular Operators Using Satellite Backhaul
With the rising cost of satellite bandwidth and the need for more of it to support an ever increasing number of voice, data and now video services, operators must seek ways to reduce both their hardware investment costs and operating expenses, especially when fierce competition forces them to provide these new services without raising their rates.
