Ericsson, NIM to Promote Mobile Phone Navigation to Carriers

By Jyothi Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributor

Technology services provider Ericsson reportedly is joining Networks In Motion, a wireless navigation and local search company, to offer NIM’s location-based services for GPS-enabled mobile phones.

The partnership will enable mobile network operators to reap the benefit of Ericsson’s (News - Alert) telecommunications network services, and help operators to offer their own branded versions of NIM’s premier mobile phone navigation service, including voice-prompted turn-by-turn directions and 3-D “perspective view” maps.

Under the deal, services such as real-time traffic information, local event information, movie show times, weather forecasts and gas prices will be available.

Doug Antone, president and chief executive officer of Networks In Motion (News - Alert), said that more GPS-enabled handsets will ship this year than personal navigation devices for the first time, pointing to the tremendous acceptance of mobile phone navigation and associated location-based services by consumers and wireless carriers alike.

Officials at NIM says that its exceptionally reliable location-based service solutions deliver location-centric information to people on the go, offering continuous access to local directories, maps, driving directions, and more, helping mobile workers, families, and individuals find whatever they need, wherever they go.

“Networks in Motion’s platform has been successful because we have worked hard at offering an easy-to-use interface, reliable service and exciting new features,” Antone said. “We are proud to be partnering with Ericsson to help bring this technology to mobile network operators and their customers worldwide.”

NIM is privately held and headquartered in Orange County, California, with international offices in Sweden and Spain. It has been delivering products to major wireless carriers and enterprise customers, enabling the rapid deployment of mapping, directional, and other location-based services utilizing our patent-pending technologies. Its applications are available on J2ME, BREW, and Windows Mobile.

Innovative Features Mean Major Savings for Cellular Operators Using Satellite Backhaul
With the rising cost of satellite bandwidth and the need for more of it to support an ever increasing number of voice, data and now video services, operators must seek ways to reduce both their hardware investment costs and operating expenses, especially when fierce competition forces them to provide these new services without raising their rates.
