TerreStar Picks BroadSoft to Power New Mobile Broadband Network Service

With the recent successful completion of an end-to-end VoIP call over TerreStar (News - Alert)-1 satellite, TerreStar Networks has now announced that it again selected BroadSoft’s BroadWorks VoIP a-application offering to power its new mobile broadband network service, which is expected to launch later this year.

Last month, TerreStar Networks (News - Alert) announced the completion of this end-to-end VoIP call over TerreStar-1, a commercial communications satellite. Two integrated satellite-terrestrial smartphones from TerreStar were used along with BroadWorks to route the satellite call over TerreStar's all-IP core network.

The TerreStar satellite Smartphone offers coverage throughout the Continental United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Hawaii and Alaska.

Offering voice, data as well as video services, TerreStar's new satellite terrestrial mobile network will be helpful in resolving critical communication and business continuity challenges that are usually faced by government and emergency responders. This service will be marketed to rural communities as well as enterprises that are in need of "anywhere" coverage throughout the United States and Canada.

Some of TerreStar's top markets include - homeland defense, homeland security and public safety organizations; rural and under-served communities; outdoor adventurers; and machine-to-machine (M2M) communication providers.

Scott Hoffpauir, chief technology officer at BroadSoft (News - Alert) said that the company’s IP communications solutions working across a variety of networks and will help TerreStar add more flexibility to their network and quickly adapt to changing service requirements.
