By Jayashree Adkoli, TMCnet Contributor

Aloqa announced that it has teamed up with Boston-based Skyhook Wireless to integrate Skyhook Wireless’ (News - Alert) patented Wi-Fi positioning system and hybrid positioning system, XPS, into Aloqa’s mobile application. The application will be providing users with location information of friends and favorite places.

Aloqa is a mobile service that proactively notifies users of interesting places, events, and more in and around close proximity. The company’s mobile-phone application, which can be downloaded from the Web site, actually pushes notifications in real time about nearby events and social opportunities. All real-time information provided is based on its relevancy with the user’s current location, pre-defined interests and social networks.

With the help of Aloqa’s mobile application, users can just look at their phone for information instead of searching in a browser using a keyword.
With the integration of Skyhook’s positioning system, Aloqa users can get fast, accurate location data.

Skyhook Wireless' XPS is a hybrid positioning system that combines the benefits of GPS, Wi-Fi positioning as well as cell-tower triangulation. This location-based system has one-second location lookups and can reach 10m to 20m, indoors and outdoors.

According to Sanjeev Agrawal, CEO of Aloqa, Skyhook's location platform lets Aloqa’s users to get fast, accurate and energy-efficient location information.
Currently, Aloqa is available in beta version in the United States and Germany on Android (News - Alert) and the Blackberry Curve 8900 and Blackberry Bold 9000. Other platforms will be launched in the near future.

“More and more leading Android apps are turning to Skyhook,” said Kate Imbach, director of marketing at Skyhook Wireless, in a press release. “The best apps require quality location. Developers can only get the location performance consumers now demand from Skyhook Wireless.”

Aloqa can be downloaded for free in the Android Marketplace and on the Blackberry 8900 and 9000 by going to http://www.aloqa.com.
In addition, Skyhook Wireless is also providing a publicly available SDK for Android developers, which is available at: www.skyhookwireless.com/developers/sdk.php.
