Geolife Brings Navmii Personal Navigation Software to Apple iPod Touch

By Jayashree Adkoli, TMCnet Contributor

U.K.-based-satellite navigation software and location-based services provider GeoLife Ltd. reportedly announced the availability of its navigation software, Navmii, on Apple iPod Touch. This global positioning system, or “GPS,” application is now available on classic/1st generation Apple (News - Alert) iPhone as well.

Backed by PosiMotion LLC.’s G-Fi mobile network/GPS router, the Navmii navigation software application brings personal turn-by-turn navigation guide to iPhone (News - Alert) and iPod touch users, for the very first time, GeoLife said.

Officials with GeoLife said in a press release that iPod touch owners who have GFi hardware and Navmii software will be able to use their device for satellite navigation featuring smart routing, automatic re-routing, interactive maps and spoken directions.

Available at Apple iTunes store, the Navmii navigation solution with GFi network provides users with clear graphics showing paper-like maps, which can be viewed either in 2D, 3D, or safety screen.

Other features of Navmii navigation solution for iPod Touch includes advanced destination search with route guide, safety cameras/speed limit alerts, points of interest, route preview in real-time and more. One of the special features for iPod Touch users includes accessing the iPod music library from the map screen.

PosiMotion’s GFi is a secure wireless GPS network router that combines both GPS and Wi-Fi in one small, sleek package. With GFi, multiple WiFi (News - Alert)-enabled devices within range can join its network and simultaneously receive secured location data with military precision. It can also act as a tracking device.

The GFi mobile network/GPS router actually streams a precise GPS signal to iPod touch. It supports both iPod touch and iPhone family, providing GPS from one GFi to up to 200 Apple devices at the same time, when in range. Additionally, it provides users with data sharing and network multiplayer gaming between Apple devices.

Similar to the Navmii software, the GFi is available at a one-time cost, with no additional monthly costs or charges.

Currently, Navmii is available only in the U.K. It will also be available in the United States, Canada, Western Europe, including Russia soon, GeoLife said.

“At last more than 20 million iPod touch users, and many first generation iPhone owners can access simple, accurate, turn-by-turn navigation on their favorite device,” Peter Atalla, CEO of Navmii said in a press release. “Combining Geolife's Navmii with the PosiMotion's G-Fi brings secure personal navigation to a whole new audience. Why buy an in-car solution SatNav when you can simply add the functionality to your iPod touch or iPhone at a fraction of the cost?”
